Horizons: A Tutoring and Mentoring Program at Upper Canada College
Upper/Senior

Through Horizons, a unique partnership connecting Upper Canada College (UCC) with several publicly funded schools, UCC students reach out to other youth in the Toronto community – to encourage dreams, kindle ambitions, and act as mentors. Horizons provides tutoring and mentoring for students in Toronto inner-city schools. The program’s mission is to support inner-city youth, build on their strengths, and help them realize the advantages of secondary and higher education. A Culture of Decision-Making at The Haverford School, USA
Lower/Middle/Upper

To make progress on a stated mission goal that all graduates have the ability "to think critically and communicate effectively," The Haverford School has introduced a school-wide focus on decision skills. Recognizing the close connection between making good choices and using effective critical thinking, we established a partnership with the Decision Education Foundation (DEF), an organization committed to teaching decision skills to young people. This is not an "add-on" program, but a whole-school integration of a plan designed for boys and adults in the community. IBSC Members may click here to view full description.

Academic Council: Student Voice in a Boys’ School
Listening to boys talk about their learning at Westlake Boys' High School, NZ
Upper/Senior

Discipline, respect and manners have always been core values at Westlake Boys High School. We knew, though, that we needed to engage boys more actively in their learning; and we knew that many of our boys – articulate, reflective, intelligent – were starting to talk to us more about what they wanted from a Westlake education. For that reason, we decided that we needed a structure to embed Student Voice within our school’s culture. Encouraged by the new Headmaster, who created an ‘Academic Council’ alongside a Music Council and a Sports Council, a group of senior students met with two key staff members to build a firm structure with some far-reaching goals.
