School Culture and Organisation
A Culture of Decision-Making at The Haverford School, USA
Lower/Middle/Upper
To make progress on a stated mission goal that all graduates have the ability "to think critically and communicate effectively," The Haverford School has introduced a school-wide focus on decision skills. Recognizing the close connection between making good choices and using effective critical thinking, we established a partnership with the Decision Education Foundation (DEF), an organization committed to teaching decision skills to young people. This is not an "add-on" program, but a whole-school integration of a plan designed for boys and adults in the community. IBSC Members may click here to view full description.
The "3Rs" at Moreton Bay Boys' College : A School-Wide Foundation for Boys' Education (Moreton Bay Boys' College, Australia)
Lower/Middle/Upper
A new school created in 2003, Moreton Bay Boys' College was presented with a unique opportunity to build both a facility and a holistic programme focused on boys' education. The "MBBC 3 R's" - Research, Reason and Relationships - act as a framework not just for teaching and learning, but for all aspects of the programme at the College. They also shape how buildings and grounds are constructed, the resources available, how the calendar and timetable are managed and which staff are employed. Academic Council: Student Voice in a Boys’ School
Listening to boys talk about their learning at Westlake Boys' High School, New Zealand
Upper/Senior
Discipline, respect and manners have always been core values at Westlake Boys' High School. We knew, though, that we needed to engage boys more actively in their learning; and we knew that many of our boys – articulate, reflective, intelligent – were starting to talk to us more about what they wanted from a Westlake education. For that reason, we decided that we needed a structure to embed Student Voice within our school’s culture. Encouraged by the new Headmaster, who created an ‘Academic Council’ alongside a Music Council and a Sports Council, a group of senior students met with two key staff members to build a firm structure with some far-reaching goals.
