To the Precipice: Encountering Professional Creative Practice in Drama
Cranbrook School in Sydney, Australia has a highly-regarded Performing Arts programme, but it was thought that boys would gain valuable insight into the craft of playwriting and production ay working alongside professionals in the field. The project revolved around the commissioning of a new play to be written by a professional writer, but with the active collaboration of a cross-section of Drama students at the school.
The finished product Precipice was an outstanding success and ran for three nights at the National Institute of Dramatic Arts at the University of New South Wales. As a result of the project the Director of Drama at Cranbrook School, Mr Robert Wickham, and the playwright, Tommy Murphy, were invited to address the International Drama Teachers' Conference (IDEA) in Hong Kong in 2007. The accompanying paper (which may be read here), delivered at IDEA, tells the story of this unique exercise from the original creative brainstorming to development, writing, rehearsal and performance.
