The “Element” is a dynamic leadership conference designed to bring
together student leaders in boys’ schools throughout Australia and
Asia Pacific. The aim of the conference is to challenge the boys
with activities, inspire them with speakers and create a network of
minds to help develop their leadership skills for the coming school
year. The conference follows on the very successful Leadership Edgee
conference, held in Western Australia in January, 2009.

The second annual Teaching Boys conference provided teachers
at the beginning of their careers in boys’ schools with a collaborative
setting to share and mine effective approaches and practices in our
all-boy settings. Above all, the conference's aim was to respect and
support these teachers, to celebrate and deepen their work with boys,
and to help them grow into tomorrow’s champions of the mission of our
schools!
Creating A Culture of Wellness in Boys' Schools

Focusing on boys' wellness in many dimensions – physical, psychosocial, academic and intellectual – and the organisational wellness of our schools was the hallmark of this conference. Creating A Culture of Wellness in Boys' Schools broke new ground in our understanding of boys' well-being and growth, and underscored the unique mission of schools dedicated to the wellness of boys.

This one-day IBSC conference on
boys and literacy -- specifically on programmes that promote boys' competency
in and enjoyment of reading at all age levels -- was especially rewarding
for English teachers, librarians and reading specialists in boys' schools.
We believe that boys' schools are uniquely positioned to be leaders in boys'
literacy education, and this conference was an opportunity to share and
celebrate exemplary practices.

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010, London, United Kingdom Keynote Speakers: Ray Lewis, Abigail James, and Michael Thompson
A one-day conference, Focus on Boys’ Education, took
place on Tuesday, January 19th at Guildhall in The City of London.
The programme began with an address
by Ray Lewis, founder of the Eastside Young Leaders’ Academy, on the
many challenges facing boys in UK education. Dr. Abigail Norfleet James,
author of Teaching the Male Brain, and an international speaker
and consultant, presented her recent research findings on the purpose
of boys’ schools, with an emphasis on how gender-based teaching can
promote boys’ engagement, motivation and achievement. Dr. Michael Thompson
then gave a presentation on the social-emotional development of boys
in relation to parenting and education. Dr. Thompson is author of many
best-selling books, including Raising Cain and It’s a Boy:
Your Son’s Development from Birth to Age 18, and has consulted in
over 500 schools world-wide.
IBSC Conferences in Hong Kong,
Thursday, October 22nd to Friday, October 23rd, 2009

On Thursday, October 22, the IBSC
held its inaugural conference for member schools in Hong Kong at Diocesan
Boys' School. This was a special joint staff development day for teachers
from St. Paul's College, Diocesan Boys' School and Tak Sun Secondary School.
The guest speaker for the conference was Abigail Norfleet James, and over
the course of the day, she made presentations on boys' learning and related
teaching strategies. The discussion was stimulating and productive indeed.
The next day, Heads and senior administrators at our IBSC schools and other
boys' schools in Hong Kong met at St. Paul's College for Teaching
Boys - A Global Dialogue. Abigail James and the Executive Director
made presentations.
We are grateful to Vice-President John Kennard, Principal
of St. Paul College, Terence Chang, Headmaster of Diocesan Boys' School,
and Dr. Edward Woo, Principal of Tak Sun Secondary School for their leadership
in building this professional community of boys' schools in Hong Kong.
Boys at Risk: Mental Health Conference: Sunday, October 25 to Monday,
October 26th, 2009 Hosted by: Shore School, North Sydney, NSW
Speakers included Gordon Parker, Jonathan Gaston, and Claire Kelly
Now more
than ever, schools are expected not only to provide an academic education
for boys, but also to care for their social and emotional well-being. During
this conference, we tackled the question, "How can boys' schools ensure
that we meet the specific mental health challenges of the boys in our care?"
Presented topics included: managing suicidal behaviour in schools; school
management of self harm and suicidal behaviour; and strategic classroom
management of boys with mental health problems. Speakers included Gordon
Parker, Jonathan Gaston, and Claire Kelly.

With thanks
to The Oratory School, this conference was a great success! It featured
panel discussions on three important areas where boys' spirituality can
be stimulated and met: the Arts - boys and creativity; the Inner Game of
religious experience in school chapel and community; and Real Time - games,
classroom and House. The one-day conference concluded with Vespers in The
Oratory School Chapel.
This conference
delved into the theme of connectedness in boys’ schools (especially
as it relates to issues such as community engagement, teaching and learning,
identity, gender, ethics, psychological and emotional health, and connectedness
to the natural environment).

Results
from research conducted by the International Boys' Schools Coalition identify
the approaches that have proven most effective in teaching middle and senior
level boys. The study draws on student and faculty data from a global sample
of boys' schools, and indicates clear contours in practice that transcend
cultural and geographical boundaries. •

The Leadership Edge Conference Sunday, January 18

2009 Christ Church Grammar School, Perth, Australia
The first
national student leadership conference for boys’ schools, The Leadership
Edge, took place at Christ Church Grammar School in Perth from Sunday, 18
January to Wednesday, 21 January 2009. The conference was aimed at boys
in the leadership groups taking on their responsibilities. in 2009. Program
highlights include a day's sailing on the Leeuwin, Australia's only Sail
Training Ship, and a visit to the SAS Barracks at Swanbourne, something
possible only in Western Australia. It also featured a workshop from Educational
consultant Greg Mitchell and talks from Ros Worthington OAM, recently retired
international cricketer, Justin Langer, and The Very Reverend John Shepherd,
Dean of the Perth Cathedral. In addition, a number of reflective and constructive
online workshops were presented. •

Theme: Boarding Boys: Building Cultures of Achievement Presenters: Brad Adams, Executive Director, International Boys’ Schools

This presentation
centered on the global concern about boys’ engagement and motivation. Mining
the wisdom of boys’ boarding schools worldwide, this workshop suggested
ways in which boarding can heighten boys’ growth and learning. The workshop
focused on those residential life practices, social-emotional and academic
support programs, and aspects of organizational culture that provide structure
and space for boys to find purpose and success. Two boys’ boarding schools
provided specific case studies. •

thanks to Landon School, the conference was a great success! On Thursday
evening, keynote speakers Rob Hershey and Ken Ruscio helped energize the
nearly 70 conference delegates for the four workshops held on Friday. The
great turnout and conference success points the way to similar IBSC conferences

Many music
educators attended the first IBSC conference on Music from March 14-15,
2008 hosted by The Haverford School in Pennsylvania. The conference, >Breaking
Gender Stereotypes: Music and Self-Expression in Boys' Schools was
a great success! The program included keynote addresses by a number of outstanding
directors. Breakout sessions focused on a variety of topics on boys' musical
development and their need and potential for artistic expression at all
ages.

Theme: Building Boy-Friendly Learning Environments

This presentation
outlined a repertoire of strategies and approaches for teaching boys based
on research on neuro-cognitive gender differences, told the story of one
boys' school's experience in building such a such powerful boy-friendly
learning environment, and explored the relevance and importance of this
experience for educators committed to the success of boys in all schools.

College
and university counselors in boys' schools attended a conference on College
Counseling at St. Mark's School of Texas from February 21-23, 2008. Keynote
speakers and workshops explored boys' expectations and engagement in college
counselling, and discussed "best practices'' that help boys "own" the process
of discovery, choice and application.

Zealand, January 30 - February 4, 2008
Author
of Teaching the Make Brain and a frequent presenter at IBSC
schools, Abigail James visited Lindisfarne College, Napier Boys High School,
Hastings Boys High School, Palmerston North Boys' High School, St. Bede's
College and Christchurch Boys High School for a series of staff and parent
presentations.
Following
on the very successful conference last March, the IBSC again sponsored activities
for boys’ schools in the United Kingdom. Dr. Leonard Sax, author of Why Gender Matters and the new Boys Adrift, was
the keynote speaker at three regional conferences in January, hosted by
Tonbridge School and Loughborough School in England, and Merchiston School
in Scotland. UK participation in the IBSC continues to grow, and we look
forward to having many more schools there in the IBSC community.

IBSC Schools in Australia and New Zealand, October 10-18, 2007
The IBSC
sponsored a speaking tour by Michael Thompson, author of Raising Cain
and other works that address boys’ social-emotional competencies and their
experience in school. Michael shared his work and wisdom at Scotch College
and Trinity Grammar School in the Melbourne area; Anglican Church Grammar
School in Brisbane; the Shore School in Sydney; and St. Alfred’s College
in Adelaide. He then travelled to Auckland Grammar School in New Zealand
for a gathering of boys' schools there.
