Meet Bruce

Bruce Collins

Bruce Collins

IBSC warmly welcomes Bruce Collins to the staff. Starting April 1, Bruce will serve our community as the brand new IBSC director of membership engagement. Before he joins us in his official capacity, we asked him a few questions so everyone can get to know him better — though we suspect he's already a familiar face to many.

Tell us a little about your background working with boys’ schools and IBSC.

I have been teaching English in schools in South Africa and the United Kingdom for most of the last 22 years. Eight of these years were spent at St. Alban’s College, an independent boys’ boarding school for grades 8-12. My main role at St. Alban’s for the last number of years has been the professional development of academic staff and in addition, more recently, as the director of academic innovation. In 2012-13, I joined the IBSC Action Research Program as a researcher and was subsequently invited to join the advisor team in the same program. I have mentored five action research teams since then.

What excites you most about your new role at IBSC?

I am most excited about connecting educators in boys’ schools around the world. The relational nature of IBSC creates the perfect platform for growing a shared understanding of best practice in educating boys. I am eager to create more opportunities for member schools to benefit from their involvement in IBSC, and for more teachers on the ground to be connected to the collective understanding that exists in this amazing organization.

How do you like to spend your time outside of work?
Outside of work, I spend as much time as possible with my family. I am also passionate about coffee and am constantly on the search for new coffee experiences. I volunteer as a barista in my spare time. Cooking — particularly with family and friends — is a favorite pastime and I also love reading.

Bruce lives with his wife, Yolanda, and three daughters in Pretoria, South Africa. He looks forward to connecting with you virtually — and hopefully in person over a steaming cup of coffee. Starting April 1, feel free to contact him at collins@theibsc.org.
