The

Compass

March 2017

Dear friends,

Hopefully the year started off well for you and the resources below strengthen your work each day to serve boys. Already this year I have had the good fortune to meet with numerous boys' educators in all five of our global regions, including groups of boys' school heads in the United Kingdom, United States, and most recently in India. The meeting in Delhi, India, was inspirational and resulted in the recruitment of several new IBSC member schools throughout the subcontinent — please join me in welcoming them! While many of us face various challenges unique in our regions, we unite in our determination to create opportunities for boys worldwide.

We hope you will continue to take advantage of your IBSC membership benefits, including joining us in Baltimore this June for the 2017 IBSC Annual Conference. Let's champion boys' education together.

With best regards,

David M. Armstrong
Executive Director, IBSC

The IBSC Board of Trustees consists of a diverse group of global educators with varying expertise and professional experience. Five standing committees guide and execute its work: Finance and Operations, Membership, Program, Research, and Trustee. The committees are comprised of Trustees, along with dedicated volunteers with particular expertise in the global boys' school community. Are you interested in joining the work of the IBSC? The committees always seek dedicated volunteers interested in engaging with the Coalition and boys' education globally who can share lessons and experiences from their schools.

Engage in the IBSC Teacher Exchange

The new IBSC Teacher Exchange provides a forum for member schools to connect and explore possible faculty exchanges. Schools take responsibility for posting their interest, keeping information current, and contacting partner schools. Together schools will work out exchange timeframes, economic considerations, and other arrangements. You can opt for a short visit to observe how a different school functions on a daily basis or you can exchange a teacher with another school for a full term or year. It's an ideal way to share best practices in our global boys' school community.

Build Confidence Through Leadership in Elementary Boys

Crescent School in Toronto, Ontario, Canada teamed with leading researchers to create the Crescent School Elementary Research Collaborative. Following up on global studies by Michael Reichert and Richard Hawley, the school's results echoed that boys are relational learners and the quality of the relationship between the boy and his teacher is a key factor in determining the quality of the learning. Crescent School adds an eighth gesture: Building Confidence Through Leadership. Use this blueprint to develop strategies to maximize best practices.

Member Story:

Armour for Life

Boys don't just spend five years of their life at Michaelhouse, a boarding school for boys set amid the rolling green hills of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands in South Africa, providing secondary education from E Block (Grade 8) to A Block (Grade 12). From the minute they arrive, the place and everything it means seeps into their skin and soaks into their marrow, becoming a massive part of the men they will grow into. Learn more about the school's Armour for Life.
