Colleagues, At this equinox, whether set to spring or fall, I extend warm welcome to the first Compass of 2023 and offer sincere thanks for your continuing contributions to the works and ambitions of your IBSC. Busyness of time and mind have been evident in engagement with IBSC online programs. In the second half of last year, over 300 members across 10 countries accessed IBSC programs and, under Bruce Collins's astute direction, the IBSC Exploring Boys' Education Podcast series has attracted more than 20,000 unique downloads!
In tandem with this lively virtual engagement has been the welcome return to in-person events. In mid-February, having raised public consciousness with evidence and sound premise to the challenges facing boys and men, author and Brookings Institution Senior Fellow Richard Reeves travelled to Montgomery Bell Academy (United States) in Nashville to entice an enthusiastic audience with lively discussion. Later that month, Harrow School (United Kingdom) focused minds on the power of boys' schools as part of the solution to the matters raised by Reeves.
That our greatest opportunity to learn exists in observing how common themes manifest differently across the rich diversity of our schools was exemplified when a Spanish delegate at Harrow posed former England cricketer and coach Mark Ramprakash a pertinent question about the benefits of boys' involvement in a game he had clearly never heard of. Warm IBSC thanks go to Brad Gioia at MBA, Alastair Land and Charles Bailey at Harrow, and their organizing teams.
As you flick these pages, click links, and learn anew, I send best wishes while, as educator, executive director, and Kiwi, encouraging all to join our 2023 IBSC Annual Conference at Westlake Boys High School (New Zealand) to learn amongst friends while taking in the stunning beauty of Aotearoa.

Build Up Boys Interviews Joseph Derrick Nelson, Ph.D. Build Up Boys "Nelson talks about reimagining Black boyhood through early childhood education. His unique Venn diagram of lived experience and academic study has brought him to the conclusion that we must train our teachers to lead with curiosity instead of projecting negative societal stereotypes and narratives onto children who deserve more. We must help Black boys not carry the damaging 'burden of resilience.' We must let them be kids." |
| | Single-sex school without prejudices Georgina Belles Diferenciada.org "Making a brief review of the history of the school, the interviews with experts, and the testimonies of former students, single-sex education is presented not only as an excellent pedagogical model but also as an innovative method that can respond to the inequalities between the sexes and the problems in the educational field that have not been overcome with the mixed school." |
