IBSC Agreeable Disagreement
Fostering Civil Discourse in Boys' Schools
An IBSC Online Program
February 9, 2026
Join us for an insightful and practical online presentation, featuring educator and researcher Callan Moore from St. Alban’s College (South Africa). Move beyond general discussions on sensitive topics and explore the specific pedagogy of teaching controversial issues in boys' schools.
Cover key themes including navigating student disengagement, establishing clear frameworks for classroom discussion, and the teacher's role in addressing complex issues. Delve into how educators can safely create "cognitive disequilibrium,” challenging boys to grapple with opposing perspectives to foster genuine understanding rather than just surface-level agreement.

- Learn from an expert educator's autoethnographic research on the distinct framework of teaching controversial issues.
- Discover proven strategies for structuring classroom debates and managing volatility when students attempt to derail discussions.

Presenter
Callan Moore
Callan Moore is a senior English teacher and housemaster at St. Alban's College (South Africa). He is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Pretoria, where his research focuses on independent boys' boarding schools as sites for the development of masculinity and racial identity. His master's degree explored the teaching of controversial issues in South African independent boys' schools.
Moore’s research centers on the pedagogy of controversial issues within boys' school contexts, examining how educators can create cognitive disequilibrium and foster multiperspectivity. He argues that addressing controversial topics and developing democratic values is essential for the relevance of independent South African boys' schools in a democratic, multiracial society. His work bridges theory and practice, drawing from both scholarly literature and his own classroom experiences in boys' education.
Beyond his academic work, Moore serves as chapel warden at St. Alban's College, coaches rugby and water polo, and has led numerous groups on the school's 23-day wilderness journey. He has presented his research in multiple contexts and is an alumnus of St. Alban's College, bringing both scholarly rigor and practical experience to conversations about independent boys' education in South Africa.
