Presenters

Katy MthethwaKaty Mthethwa

Katy Mthethwa is the founder of Thrive Together, which facilitates creating emotionally safe spaces for healthy, honest conversations around difficult subjects of social, racial, and gender-based challenges of South Africa and beyond. She creates these spaces in dynamic workshops, speaking engagements, and her online diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging curriculum for grades 3-7 and 8-9.

Mthethwa graduated from Kingston University with a B.A. (Hons) in primary education.  Prior to teaching she spent several years in Zimbabwe and Mozambique working with churches and community projects and co-running a home in Beira for teenage boys who’d come off the streets. During this time she met her husband Tony and moved to South Africa in 2007 to marry him.

Mthethwa was head of thinking skills at St. Peter’s Boys and Girls Schools in Johannesburg, leading the team that resulted in Exeter University’s Thinking School accreditation in 2014. She later managed the library, creating a space celebrating diversity and developing the school's diversity, equity, and inclusion curriculum, Izenzo Zobuntu, from which the Thrive Together curriculum was birthed.

Mthethwa is a creative and dynamic leader in her field. As a founder member of Thinking Schools South Africa, she’s trained hundreds of teachers in a variety of thinking tools. These have empowered teachers to infuse a thinking philosophy into the core of the curriculum, engaging students in deeper learning experiences. She is adept at using these tools in Thrive Together to engage in deep thinking around challenging issues.

As a cultural intelligence (CQ) facilitator and trainer, Mthethwa provides effective frameworks for leadership and collegial teams to deepen their understanding of the cultural dynamics impacting relationships and work. This enables teams to truly thrive together as differences become assets.
