IBSC Getting High School Boys to Read
An IBSC Online Program for Teachers in Boys' High Schools
Co-hosted by The Southport School (Australia)
April 25 and May 2, 2023
Join Michael Dezuanni and a global group of boys’ school librarians for two workshops on getting high school boys to read.
Encouraging boys to read as we build reading cultures in boys’ schools remains challenging. Despite the popular belief that this task falls into the domain of librarians and language teachers, it is an important issue for every teacher because research shows that reading affects boys’ success across the curriculum. All boys’ schools, teacher-librarians, and educators should understand how best to address the challenges associated with building cultures of reading in boys' schools.

The project has collected data from over 10,000 young Australians from schools nationwide, including from several independent boys’ schools. Then discuss teens' choices when selecting books to read and focus on the relationship between the digital world and reading—which is often positive and productive, despite concerns about screen time. Get some practical suggestions for getting teenage boys to read in digital times.
Join facilitated discussions with global colleagues to examine and consider ways to develop and grow a reading culture for teenage boys in your school.
