IBSC Sports Betting and Boys' Schools

An IBSC Online Program
May 14, 2026
Join Isaac Rose-Berman, research and policy fellow at the American Institute for Boys & Men, for an online presentation exploring how the global gambling industry targets young men and what boys' schools can do about it.
Sports betting is one of the fastest-growing industries in the world and boys are among its most deliberately targeted consumers. The conversation in schools too often defaults to moral prohibition. Rose-Berman, who left a career inside the industry disillusioned by its practices, takes a different approach: Rather than telling boys that gambling is wrong, he shows them how the system is engineered to make them lose.
Drawing on academic research, Rose-Berman equips educators with the knowledge to help boys recognize and resist sophisticated manipulation. The goal is not to moralize but to reframe, teaching boys to see through the tactics of billion-dollar companies as a matter of critical thinking, not a lecture on vice. Grounded in industry experience, original research, and a clear-eyed understanding of how teenage boys think, gain practical strategies for educators working with boys from middle school age upward, in contexts around the globe.
Attend this interactive session online to explore these themes.
- Why the Game Is Rigged: Understand how gambling companies exploit cognitive biases and why the "don't be a sucker" framing resonates with boys in ways that moralizing simply does not.
- The Research Behind the Risk: Explore what the evidence shows about sports betting's impact on young men, including the financial, psychological, and social harms that follow legalization.
- Practical Tools for Educators: Walk away with classroom-ready strategies for engaging boys in honest, evidence-based conversations about gambling.
Who Should Attend?
Educators and school leaders who want to understand the scale of the sports betting challenge facing boys' schools, move beyond ineffective prohibitionist approaches, and equip themselves with practical, research-backed strategies for talking to boys about gambling
