February 4 – 6, 2018
McCallie School
Chattanooga, Tennessee, United States
Gain expertise and best practices in guiding boys during the college counseling process. Join fellow boys’ educators for the IBSC conference Boys in the College Counseling Process and Beyond, a highly participatory set of meetings and presentations hosted by McCallie School in Chattanooga. Prepare to broaden your perspective with a series of conference guests with expertise in supporting boys generally, as well as specifically in the application process and during the college years.
At the opening session and dinner, hear from Troy Kemp, executive director of the National Center for the Development of Boys, as he shares insight about brain research and characteristics of boys helpful to consider as we work with them in the college search process. Please explore his organization’s website https://understandingboys.org/.
On Monday, we spend the day at Sewanee: The University of the South. Tour its scenic campus and surrounding environment. Attend a special information session, conference meetings, and dinner with faculty and admissions officers. Hear from residential and student life administrators about specific challenges with college life they see boys dealing with and how they address those needs.
On Tuesday, we finish the conference in Chattanooga at McCallie School. Spend the morning discussing hot topics determined by you and other conference participants. After lunch, several deans and directors from colleges and universities around the country — including Rhodes College, Trinity College, Belmont University, Purdue University, and the honors college at the University of Tennessee — offer their observations about what they see from boys in the admissions process. The Dean of Students from Rhodes College continues our discussion of how we can better prepare boys for the life they will find on campus. Conclude by 3:00 PM in time to travel home. You may want to extend your trip to visit area colleges in Atlanta or Nashville. Plan to book your flight for 4:00 PM or later.
Take advantage of this unique opportunity to enhance your perspective of the specific needs, challenges, and opportunities of boys in the college counseling process and later during their college experience. As always, the gathering gives you a wonderful occasion for good fellowship and making friends.
